Juan Miguel Herrera
Active 1870-1895

Juan Miguel Herrera was born in 1835 in the village of Arroyo Hondo, just north of Taos, New Mexico. Herrera sculpted mostly Penitente figures for moradas in the Taos area. In fashioning his bultos, he worked with tempera and enamel or sometimes with a mixture of both on the same piece. Some standard features of his bultos are raised eyebrows and pronounced upper eyelids. The mouths of the figures of Christ are often open, sometimes with teeth showing with beards being thickly carved and incised. Juan Miguel Herrera died in 1905.
