Saint: La Santísima Trinidad/The Most Holy Trinity

Quill Pen Santero, New Mexico, 1828-1840 Gesso, wood and water-soluble paint on paper 13” x 11 ½” History Collection NMHM, 2007.32.236

The Holy Trinity exemplifies Christian doctrine; it represents God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in the mystery of the three aspects of divinity contained in one. This unusual piece on paper is the only one known of this type done by this artist. The writing at the bottom right reads: “La Santísima Trinidad Padre hijo espíritu santo” (“Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”).
